Term Two

University has been back in session for two weeks now, so I thought it was time for me to begin my blog again!

Over Christmas I left the rainy country of England and returned home to snowy Canada. I never thought I would say it, but I missed the rain! I made my way back to Oxford on January 5th and it was a long trip! My plane was supposed to leave Edmonton at 5:30, but it was delayed an hour and then like most flights, by the time you're on the plane and ready to takeoff it is an hour later. However, it was only a six hour flight to Iceland. When we got to Iceland I had an eight hour layover before my flight to London. They have it set up nicely in Iceland where they have tours you can go on if you have a long layover, but sadly for me, most of the tours returned at the time my flight left or just after, so I spent eight hours in the airport sleeping, reading, and using my computer. The flight from Iceland to London was only two hours which was nice, and we arrived in London at 9:30pm. I was able to quickly make it through airport security and to my hotel, Tudor Court Hotel, which is five minute walk from Paddington Station in London. The next morning, suffering quite badly from jet lag, I went to catch the train to Oxford.  I got on the train and was ready to go when the conductor announced that we all had to get off the train because someone had jumped in front of a train farther down the tracks, so all the trains had been canceled for the rest of the morning. I then had an adventure trying to figure out how to get to Oxford. My phone wasn't working because I hadn't payed for my plan yet, so I was going off of what signs said. After wandering around aimlessly for about an hour I learned where I had to go which was only two stops away on the London Underground. I safely navigated my way through the tunnels of the London Underground, got on and off the tube, and to the new train station. The train ride from the new station was pretty straight forward and I was so happy when I finally got to my room!

The rest of my time back here in Oxford has been mostly uneventful. My friends and I went to the board game cafe here again and had lots of fun. I went and saw The Woman in Black 2 in the theatre because one of my friends just wanted to see me scared and flailing, which I definitely was! I'm never going to willingly go see a scary movie in a theatre again! I need the protection of a blanket to make it through. I probably only watched 50% of the movie full on. The rest of the time I was hiding behind my hands! The last thing I've done is I went to the History Society pub quiz night. I went last term and didn't manage to answer one question, so my goal for this time was to get one and guess what! I answered three!! That's a 300% improvement! On top of that my team won! Goes to show that if you take a smart person with you they will probably know other smart people who will win as you sit there confused!

For the second week of school I had my two examination essays due, so most of my time was spent reading and writing for that. That week I also FINALLY chose my dissertation topic! I'll write about it more later after I've done some more research and the acquisition of the object has been officially announced. What I can say is that it has to do with medieval science and objects, so no one I know is really interested in it but me and my supervisors!

The last thing I have been working on along with 5 of my classmates is planning and organizing an exhibition we'll be putting up at the end of April. It will be at the History of Science Museum and is going to be on amateur scientists and modern people's relationship to science. Now, for the modern day stories we're defining science in a very loose and broad term to include everything from cooking, music to camping. I'll update you more on that as it progresses along with posting pictures when it is up!

The weather in Oxford has been really nice except that it has snowed a couple of times. Today was the first time it actually lasted through the night, but it was melted by lunchtime.

That's all I have for now! I don't know if anything interesting will be happening any time soon, but I'll keep you updated!
